Greece’s military is setting up a DNA database to help identify the remains of Greek WWII soldiers who died and were buried in Albania.

The Hellenic National Defence General Staff announced on Wednesday the establishment of the database with samples from living relatives to help the authorities identify sets of remains currently being exhumed in Albania.

Work to locate, exhume and identify the Greek soldiers killed in war operations in Albania in the 1940-41 period started on Jan. 22 in the Dragot area (Tepelene).

The exhumations follow an agreement between Greece and Albania as well as agreements signed in December by a joint committee of experts.

The identification procedure of the remains demands two blood samples from living relatives of the fallen soldiers, particularly one from the mother’s side and one sample from the father’s side.

More information for those interested is available on www.geetha.mil.gr or they can call the responsible department of the General Staff on: +30 210-6573274 and +30 210-6575020.
